Not too shabby!

Check out these quick lifestyle changes you can make to cut 500 calories a day! That’s almost 5 pounds a month!

BE RESTLESS: Cut 500 calories a day the Heart Smart Minute way by getting up and walking around your home or office every hour. Wear a step tracker so you know exactly how many steps per day you take–set a goal for 10,000!

TURN OFF THE TV: Cut 500 calories a day the Heart Smart Minute way by turning off the TV while you eat. According to new research from the Univ. of Massachusetts, people who eat while watching TV, consume close to 300 calories more. So TURN OFF the TV and take the dog for a walk after dinner.

LOSE THE BOOZE: Cut 500 calories a day the Heart Smart Minute way by cutting out the sugary additives in cocktails. Syrups, sugar, sour mixes, and “house speciality” drinks are loaded with empty calories, some topping well over 800cal per drink. Switch your drink to those with clear mixers like club soda, or wine spritzers. Your waistline will feel the difference!

EAT AT HOME: Cut 500 calories a day the Heart Smart Minute way by staying home and cooking dinner. Nothing puts weight on faster than eating out, even when you think you’re making healthy choices. Vegetables, fish, and meat are loaded with salt, oil, butter, and marinades. Even if you request your order to be cooked “clean,” you never know what is added in the kitchen last minute to increase flavor. Save the meals out for specials occasions, or at most once a week for your cheat meal. It’s better for your waistline and your wallet!

KNOW THE SERVING SIZE: Cut 500 calories a day the Heart Smart Minute way by reading the nutrition label! A low calorie dinner may say only 400 calories per serving, but in reality what’s in front of you is really four servings. Always read the label–it’s easy to be tricked into eating more calories than you think!

Features include King Mez, who recently worked with J Cole, and Jamla’s own Tyler Woods.

The tape chronicles some of his past struggles, but contrasts the hardships with songs like “Quik Tribute” that portray his “fun” side.

All in all, I’m very impressed with the project: 16 tracks of success, struggles and SUBSTANCE!

The reasons they’re very likely to be your best resources for nutrition information:

1. He has been a Registered Dietitian since 1980.

2. He’s the main nutrition teacher at Fitness Institute International.

Although he has a ton of resources on his website, our favorite are these:

1. “Behave Yourself” is a Word document that you can download from Professor Patton’s Weight Management Page. It’s a Nutrition and Weight Management Workbook.

2. For those of you who are more fitness-minded, he has provided the Powerpoints from his class’s “14. If those two resources aren’t enough, he has a plethora of other powerpoints, text outlines, and links to videos.

We also have our own nutrition write-ups, but Patton has been doing this much longer than we have… And he’s the one with the Registered Dietitian credential. His vocabulary and knowledge of the culture was stellar. Bua witnessed the birth of hip hop before it even had a name.

Hip hop fans, especially younger, seldom take the time to recognize where hip hop came from; in a time before the industry “had an annual spending power of a trillion dollars.”

Before the Jay Z’s and Kanye’s, emcees weren’t rapping about Bentleys and mansions. Lyrics were more along the lines of, “Broken glass…everywhere” which characterized the utter despair that people were witnessing.

Growing up in Manhatten, Bua was “inspired by the rawness of the streets.”

In the microcosm of complete disarray that took place in the late 1970′s, locals were singing about the plight of the ghetto and the plight of the South Bronx in, what Bua calls, “the melting pot of insanity.” No laws, very little police and the blackout of 1977 made for a political upheaval that contributed to the material that the first hip hop artists created.

“Instead of fighting with weapons, people started bboying and breakdancing and up-rocking,” said Bua. This emotional outlet was also known as “physical graffiti” which is essentially “the physical embodiment of the motions of graffiti writing.”

“My world was being spoken to by these young emcees,” said Bua. “We took the physical energy of what was going on socially and politically, and we transformed that into positivity.”

What about hip hop now?

“Hip hop has changed… It’s not bad, it’s not good, it just is.”

Bua believes that hip hop does not have the authenticity that it once had in the late 1970′s, but that’s because this is “not the beginning of the culture. This is the next generation.”

In light of Bua’s most recent publication, Legends of Hip Hop, I asked him what made someone a legend: “Someone who changes the game in a profound way,” said Bua, “without whom we wouldn’t have a culture; a seminole part of the culture.”

He exemplifies Run DMC as the first rap group to bring hip hop to the forefront. They were the first artists to go gold, platinum and basically brought hip hop to a world stage. “Without Run DMC I don’t know if we’d have this culture.”

“James Brown is the most sampled artist in the world. Without him, would we have music?”

Two weeks ago, an amazing friend, sister and daughter suddenly passed from a rare, undetected condition.

If there was a person or a family that I would guess to be sheltered from any kind of adversity, it would be the Garrish family. They are the most pure, compassionate and giving people I have ever met. It just goes to show, God has a way that we may not understand at first. We all must have faith in that fact, especially during times like these.

Through all of this grief, confusion and despair, positive things are happening as a result. The Garrish’s first concern was to help someone else in light of their daughter’s untimely passing. Can you believe that? Instead of isolating themselves, they want to help local students go to college.

Through the website, GiveForward, an account was set up for people to donate, even a dollar, to help the Garrish family’s vision turn into a reality. In just 48 hours, over $3,000 was raised, and it continues to rise. We have less than a month left to reach our goal of $10,000. We have had anonymous donations of up to $500, and countless people giving various amounts out of pure generosity. For that, we are so thankful.

People know Nicole’s worth, and the impact she had on those around her. She changed lives while she was here, and she will continue to change lives as she watches over us in heaven.

PLEASE donate, or spread the word about this incredible fundraiser. People will have a better and easier college experience because of Nicole’s undeniable impact on so many.

SHARE THIS ON YOUR FACEBOOK, TWITTER, EMAIL, WHEREVER! http://www.giveforward.com/nicolemariegarrishscholarshipfund

Also, we are holding a fundraiser THIS SATURDAY (May 5, 2012) at the Player’s Lounge on Federal, just north of Yamato.

You can thank me later…

Today, in a world of auto corrects and spell checkers, people seldom take the time to freshen up on their grammar skills. However, spell check can’t do everything.

For example, while misspelled words are often detected, their proper form is usually your call.

Your vs You’re:

It’s simple; YOUR is a possessive, YOU’RE is a conjunction that means YOU ARE. “Your so strange” makes no sense whatsoever. It’s just like saying, “Mine so strange.” What?

Sounds like common sense, right? Well, not so common.

To, Too and Two:

“To” is a preposition that shows how one thing is situated with something else. In other words, it shows the relationship between two words. A preposition often locates something in space or time. “I’m going TO the store.”

“Too” is like an “also” — It is also an “in excess” phrase. “I like that too.” OR “That girl is wearing too much makeup.”

“Two” is a NUMBER! It comes after one.

There, Their and They’re

“There” signifies a place — “The crayon is there”

“Their” signifies possession: “Their music was spectacular.”

“They’re” is a conjunction for THEY ARE. “They’re genius!”

It’s and Its

“It’s” is a conjunction for IT IS only! People often get confused because apostrophes often signify possession. For example, “The dog’s collar didn’t fit properly.” OR, “Bailey’s hair fell out during practice.” However, this conjunction is only used for “it is” phrases, like: “It’s a shame to think that most people don’t know how to use proper grammar.”

“Its” is used for possession. “Its shadow took up the whole street.” OR “The tree was tall and its leaves were falling.”

This came to my attention from a fellow blogger. I’d never heard of this company before, and I’m not in a position to attack their character. They may be nice guys with good intentions. However, the science behind what they claim to be a “breakthrough” is no breakthrough at all. Dietitians have understood this for a very long time.

Essentially, they have created a new sports drink that is starch based. I’m cool with that. I’m all for people eating more starch and less sugar. Starch takes more time to digest and therefore makes a less significant impact on your blood sugar levels. However, my point of contention is that their marketing/science is deceptive. You could save your money and just eat some rice, beans, corn, or any other starch. Scientifically, you’d get the same amount of benefit.

First off, what is it? It’s just “modified corn starch“. It’s not harmful, but it’s not new.

However, their study that “proves” its value is very misleading. Essentially, all they did was measure the body’s insulin response to sugar (maltodextrin is a sugar, and it’s actually the one that spikes blood sugar the most… even more than table sugar) vs. starch (their “Superstarch”).

This is misleading because any type of sugar is going to make blood sugar spike more than any type of starch. That’s just a fact of biochemistry because starches are long chains of sugars. The reason starches take longer to spike your blood sugar is because the body has to take the time to break them down into sugars.

So essentially they could have used any type of sugar or any type of starch and had the same findings. Instead of “Superstarch”, they could have used potatoes, rice, or any other type of vegetable or whole grain. They would have had the same results.

Really, all they did was prove the Glycemic Index and the fact that some carbohydrates are digested faster than others.

In conclusion, if you need a source of liquid starch, then this is your ticket. Go buy it. However, be sure to realize that it’s not magic. A starch is a starch is a starch. When starches are digested, they are broken down into monosaccharides (glucose, fructose, or galactose), and when they’re squirted into your small intestine, your body can’t tell where they came from. They’re simply a monosaccharide now. There’s no “glucose from rice” or “glucose from Superstarch”. There is only “glucose”, and your body will use it the same way regardless of its source.
