“The high school building is safe,” says Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, who is currently taking care of 10 out of 12 girls who have recently come down with tourette’s-like symptoms.

“It’s happened before, all around the world, in different parts of the world. It’s a rare phenomena. Physicians are intrigued by it,” Mechtler told TODAY. “The bottom line is these teenagers will get better.”

Basically, 12 girls from Leroy Central High School in New York were suddenly plagued by “uncontrollable body movements, tics and verbal outbursts, similar to Tourette’s syndrome.” (Today) While the mysterious condition is baffling and bizarre, questions were immediately raised about environmental factors that could have contributed to this.

However, the school says no.

LeRoy Central School District released a Statement regarding the story, stating:

The environment or an infection is not the cause of the students’ tics.
There are many causes of tic-like symptoms.
Stress can often worsen tic-like symptoms.
These symptoms are real.
